One of my favorite books is "The Cay" by Theodore Taylor. It is about a young boy who gets shipwrecked with a total stranger. Read the story to see what happens as they learn to work with each other.

Did you know that dogs were used during the Vietnam War to help find mines and enemy soldiers? "Cracker" by Cynthia Kadohata is a novel about a soldier and his dog. This is a very realistic fictional account of the war that puts you right in the middle of the action. If you like war stories, you don't want to miss this one.

I read Poe Park over the weekend. It was really sad. Something really sad happens because of gangs, and kids doing things they shouldn't. The main character is Hispanic and there are a few Spanish words included. The story takes place in the Bronx, so the culture is a little different from Coffeyville. Even though the reading level is low, I think because of the content it would be liked best by 5th and 6th graders.

"The White Giraffe" by Lauren St. John is a really good book about a girl who has lost her parents in a fire. She has to go live in Africa on a game reserve with her grandmother, who she has never met. I liked this book. I could just imagine being there with the animals in the wilds of Africa. There are poachers and a little fantasy. I think if you like animals and the outdoors you'll like this book.

I read "Home of the Brave" by Katherine Applegate. This book is written in free verse and easy to read. It was a sad story about a boy that moves to the United States from the Sudan after his father and brother are killed during a war. His mother is missing. He moves in with his aunt and cousin and has to adjust to a whole new way of life. Most of us have it easy when I think about children like this character who have had to overcome so much. I would really recommend this book. It makes us appreciate what we have, and maybe learn a little about accepting and welcoming Immigrants.
